  24. You can anonymously FTP to ftp.microsoft.com into the /Advsys/MSclient/wfw
  25. directory and get WFWTCP.EXE.

  50. This paper will attempt to help an individual interested in turning a 
  51. DOS machine with ethernet and internet IP address into a dial-in slip 
  52. server.  This paper is based on my experiences tying to configure my 
  53. machine for just this purpose.  Although I am not an expert by any 
  54. stretch of the imagination, I have learned a little from this 
  55. experience.

  57. My configuration is a AST 486/66 Premmia running with 8 meg ram, 3C509 
  58. Etherlink III network card, U.S. Robotics 14.4k modem on the server 
  59. side.
  60. Gateway 486/33 with 4 meg ram, Zoom internal 14.4k modem on the client 
  61. side.
  62.  
  63. Server side
  64.  
  65. 1.  First acquire two IP addresses (or one if you already have one).  
  66. The addresses must be in the same domain i.e. 123.123.123.xxx and 
  67. 123.123.123.xxy.  These numbers will be assigned by you system admin.  
  68. Be sure that you set up names if your site has a name server.  Once 
  69. again your sysadm can help here.
  70.  
  71. 2.  Get the needed software.  I will place the needed software on my 
  72. machine for anonymous FTP under slip_server.  The address is 
  73. aurora.bld189.jccbi.gov (162.58.16.196).  Some of this software is 
  74. shareware, so be sure to read the agreements.  Here is a list of the 
  75. needed files from aurora:

  79.             autoexec.nos

  82.             slippr13.zip
  83.             winsock.zip  (you probably have this)

  88. You will also need a packet driver for your network card.  The one you 
  89. use with winsock should be o.k.        
  90.  
  91. 3.  Create a dir named nos and place all the files there.  Then under 
  92. the directory nos, create another dir called slip.  Place the 
  93. sliplog.zip and slipper.zip files in there and unzip them.
  94.  
  95. 4.  Edit the comlog.xxx files as outlined below:
  96.     comlog.msg - place your clients Ip address there.
  97.     comlog.pwd - The order has meaning.  1st name listed is sysop, he 
  98. has special powers!  Read manual for more info.  The second is guest.  
  99. The third is where I put my mine.  The first entry on one line is your 
  100. password and will be what you type at the Login prompt when signing in.  
  101. The number indicates amount of minutes available each day.  I set mine 
  102. to 1440 ;)
  103.     comlog.log - This is just a log file that shows who and when 
  104. access was made to your system.
  105.  
  106. 4.  Edit the autoexec.nos file inserting your Ip address and ethernet 
  107. address where noted.  Save this file and place it in your ROOT (i.e. 
  108. c:\) dir.  Be sure that you make all changes outlined in the beginning!
  109.  
  110. 5.  Create a boot disk in your favorite dos format and place the new 
  111. autoexec.bat on this disk.  Be sure that everything points to the proper 
  112. place.  The config.sys is nothing different.  I'll include mine just for 
  113. your info.

  115. 6.  Boot using your slip boot disk.  If all goes well you will be 
  116. presented with:

  118. Keyboard locked
  119. enter password:
  120.  
  121. If you get this, and the auto-answer light on the modem is lit, all went 
  122. well, on the server end.
  123.  
  124. Go ahead and enter the password and play around with nos.  Try to telnet 
  125. etc, to make sure it is configured properly.  Once your happy, type lock 
  126. to lock the keyboard.
  127.  
  128. If you fail to get this message, double check all your paths and where 
  129. they point to.  I also had problems with my vectors, make sure that they 
  130. are consistent through out the set up.  If you still have problems, 
  131. contact me and we'll work together and try to solve it.

  133. Client side
  134.  
  135. 1.  Create a dir named trumpet in the root dir.  Place winsock.zip into 
  136. this dir and unzip.
  137.  
  138. 2.  Start up TCPman and select setup under the file menu.  Select slip 
  139. with compressed headers, hardware handshaking.  Fill in your client ip 
  140. address, nameserver Ip address, and domain suffix.  Be sure the com port 
  141. and baud rate is correct as well.  The numbers are mtu - 296, tcprwin 
  142. 1024, and tcpmss 256.  These are the numbers I use, I dont fully 
  143. understand these so if someone would like to shed some light on it...

  145. 3.  Close TCPman and restart it for changes to take effect.
  146.  
  147. 4.  Under Dialler, select manual login.  This will disable slip and 
  148. allow you to enter your modem dial command i.e atdtxxxxxxx.
  149.  
  150. 5.  Once you connect to the slip server and see the welcome message, 
  151. press return.  You will the see the Login prompt.  Once you enter your 
  152. password and press return, The server will display time remaining and ip 
  153. address.  If you only get garbage or nothing, check your baud rates on 
  154. both end to be sure they are the same!
  155.  
  156. 6.  Press esc to enable slip and you should be slipping ;)
  157.  
  158. 7.  You will then need to set up all winsock apps.
